Violence on television affects children negatively, according to psychological research.

The three major effects of seeing violence on television are:

Studies by George Gerbner, Ph. D. , at the University of Pennsylvania, have shown that children’s television shows contain about 20 violent acts each hour and also that children who watch a lot of television are more likely to think that the world is a mean and dangerous place.   Children often behave differently after they’ve been watching violent programs on television.

In one study done at Pennsylvania State University, about 100 preschool children were observed both before and after watching television; some watched cartoons  that had many aggressive and violent acts; others watched shows that didn’t have any kind of violence. The researchers noticed real differences between the kids who watched the violent shows and those who watched nonviolent ones.

Children who watched the violent shows were more likely to strike out at playmates, argue, disobey authority and were less willing to wait for things than those children who watched nonviolent programs.

Field studies by Leonard Eron, Ph. D. and his associates at the University of Illinois, found that children who watched many hours of television violence when they were in elementary school tended to also show a higher level of aggressive behavior when they became teenagers.

By observing these youngsters until they were 30 years old, Dr. Eron found that the ones who’d watched a lot of television when they were eight years old were more likely to be arrested and prosecuted for criminal acts as adults.

Questionable Infl­uences

For most of television’s early years, it was diffi­cult to fi­nd role models who would inspire young girls in the viewing audience.

In the mid-1970s, a new genre of programs such as “Charlie’s Angels,” “Wonder Woman,” and “The Bionic Woman” entered the scene.

Now, there were females on television who were in control, aggressive and were not dependent upon males for their success.

Conventional wisdom might suggest this phenomena would have a positive impact on younger female viewers. But, a recent study by L. Rowell Huesmann, Ph. D. – a psychologist at the Aggression Research Group at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research –refutes that premise.

Huesmann’s research states that young girls who often watched shows featuring aggressive heroines in the 1970s have grown up to be more aggressive adults involved in more confrontations, shoving matches, chokings and knife fi­ghts than women who had watched few or none of these shows.

One example cited by Huesmann is that 59 percent of those who watched an above-average amount of violence on television as children were involved in more than the average number of such aggressive incidents later in life.

Huesmann says that ages six to eight are very delicate and critical years in the development of children. Youngsters are learning “scripts” for social behavior that will last them throughout their life. Huesmann found those “scripts” didn’t always have happy endings.

In the onset of his research – which took place between 1977 and 1979 – Huesmann asked 384 girls in the ­first through ­fifth-grades in Oak Park, Ill. about their viewing habits.

In his follow-up between 1992 and 1995, he tracked down 221 of the original subjects and  collected information on their life histories. Huesmann had subjects enter responses into a  computer and as an accuracy check, Huesmann got information about each subject from a close friend or spouse.

What Is Being Done About The Problem

The television industry took steps toward implementing a ratings system for its programming at a meeting with President Clinton in late February.  The policy is to develop a ratings system for television programs that will give parents an indication of content not suitable for children.

The rating system may use letter codes (such as PG-7 for programs deemed suitable for children aged 7 and up, PG-10, PG-15, etc. ), or the television industry may develop a short description of content which would be broadcast prior to the program.

Unlike the Motion Picture Association of America, which uses an independent third-party board to rate films, television networks will rate their own programs.

Several years ago I began the study of mindset.   I have always been interested in improving myself, but always stopped at “being positive”, I had no idea that the entire universe was working with or against me at all times.

 

Then I began to read more and study more about natural law.   Natural law is by definition:

 

Skepticism runs wild in our mindset as human beings.   Most people think that things happen to them because of outside forces beyond their control, especially when it comes to the negative.

Recently, I was having a conversation with my mentor, and I said “I really can’t believe that things that I have ‘asked’ for are really truly coming to fruition. “  He said “you have been asking for a lot of things, and in time you will have them all. ”

 

Now it’s not like I thought about things yesterday, and poof they are at my door this morning.   I am speaking of a consistent set of thoughts, plans and ideas running through my head in working towards these “goals” consistently in my daily activity.

 

But what really excites me, is that things seem to just fall in place and I seemingly have nothing to do with it.   But in actuality I have everything to do with it.  

So what does it take to make it “happen”?  Truthfully, I can’t answer that for you, you have to answer that for you.   I can only tell you that two things have to be in place mentally.

 

Number one, you have to have a general idea of what you want in life.   Now a lot of people will tell you to make a dream board and right down what you really want.   Personally, I could fill up six more garages with what I want.   But deep down inside, I just want to be the best “me” I can be and have fun.

So that’s it.   Nothing earth shaking, just be the best human being that I am capable of being today, and work on getting better tomorrow.   Simply improve everyday and add a few good friends and hearty laughs along the way.

Now the secret, DO IT!  You can’t just sit down on your couch and think it, you have to do it.   Let me share what I do, to work everyday towards the above goal.

Everyday I wake up, I lay in bed and focus.   No matter how bad I may feel, physically or mentally, I work to focus on something positive.   I have a plan for each day, what I am going to do every hour of the day till 5pm, sometimes even further into it.

I try to make every encounter with other human beings positive, it doesn’t always work, but I consciously plan and review conversations and try to stay positive.   I try and stay in the company of positive people, granted sometimes easier said than done.

I study other people who I admire, what are their habits, what can they teach me.   Younger or older you can learn from everybody.  

I do Toastmasters, every week.   For me comfort in speaking is one of the hardest things to do, so I meet it head on.   Nobody is telling me I have to do it, except me.   You see in life, I feel you have to challenge yourself to accomplish your goals.   If you stay in the same place all the time, the “comfort zone”, you will not grow or accomplish much of anything other than a paycheck.

I continue to study natural law.   The more we are in harmony with our surrounding and natural law, the more abundant and opulent or life is.   These laws are facts, not myths and legends but as real as the day is long.   Study the laws of Attraction, the laws of Abundance and so on, your life will never be the same.

Education in Pakistan

Students normally read about 5 subjects in a chosen stream such as pre-medical, science, humanities, pre-engineering etc. and then sit for the Higher Secondary School Certificate exam in those subjects which are also administered by area boards. Those that receive passing marks (normally 33% of all subjects cummulative) are awarded a Higher Secondary School Certificate or HSSC.

Technical Education

Students can enter a plethora of technical institutes for technical certificates and degrees. The entrance requirements for these courses vary greatly with some such as carpentry requiring the applicant to be literate whereas others such as B. Tech in automation require HSSC.

Post-Secondary

Pakistani education system

Students can then precede to a College or University for Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Science (BSc) or Commerce/Business Administration (BCom/BBA) degree courses. There are two types of Bachelor courses in Pakistan namely Pass or Honours. Pass constitutes two years of study and students normally read three optional subjects (such as Chemistry, Mathematics, Economics, Statistics) in addition to almost equal number of compulsory subjects (such as English, Pakistan Studies and Islamic Studies) whereas Honours are three or four years and students normally specialize in a chosen field of study such as Biochemistry (BSc Hons. Biochemistry). It is important to note that Pass Bachelors is now slowly being phased out for Honours throughout the country. Students may also after earning their HSSC may study for professional Bachelor degree courses such as engineering (B Engg), medicine (MBBS), vetrinary medicine(DVM) law (LLB), agriculture (B Agri), architecture (B Arch), nursing (B Nurs) etc. which are of four or five years duration depending on the degree

Some Masters Degrees also consist of 1. 5 years. Then there are PHD Education as well in selected areas. One has to choose specific field and the suitable university doing research work in that field. PhD in Pakistan consists of minimum 3-5 years.

Pakistani universities churn out almost 1. 2 million skilled graduates annually. The government has announced a $1 billion spending plan over the next decade to build 6 state-of-the-art science and engineering universities. The scheme would be overseen by the Higher Education Commission.

Owing to the failure of public schools to provide quality education to the children of Pakistan, many parents have enrolled their children in private schools. Although traditionally, private schools have been a luxury only the rich can afford, this is not necessarily the case in the current reemergence of the private sector in Pakistan’s education system.

Nationally, overall private school primary enrolment (as a percentage of total primary enrolment) is 13 percent in Pakistan.

A recent survey in urban Pakistan found that 59 percent of households earning less than Rs 3,500 had children who were enrolled in private schools in the city of Lahore. Similarly, in the low-income and economically-deprived Orangi district of Karachi, a surprising 60 percent of all enrolled children went to private primary schools.

The findings of this study are given added support by a 1996 study conducted in the urban areas of five districts in the province of Punjab. This study found that even among low-income households, there was a private school enrolment rate of 50 percent.

More than 36,000 private institutions attend to the educational needs of 6. 3 million children.

There is a parallel education system in place in some private schools, i. e. the ‘O’ level and ‘A’ level system. These curriculums are set by the University of Cambridge of the UK. Students studying in this system do not follow the syllabi set by the Pakistan government, but subjects such as Islamiyat and Pakistan studies are still compulsory for most high school students. The ministry of education also keeps an eye on what is being taught in these private schools. Generally, these schools are accessible to the elite few due to the high fees charged by O/A levels schools. However, during recent years, the phenomenon of appearing for the Cambridge exams “privately” has been rising. Students attend private tutoring sessions, register for the British exams via the British Council, and do no attend any school to prepare for their exams.

Criticism

An issue of National Geographic conveys the adversity poor families must face. Some schools are run so badly that few kids attend.

It’s not unusual in Pakistan to hear of public schools that receive no books, no supplies, and no subsidies from the government. Thousands more are ‘ghost schools’ that exist only on paper, to line the pockets of phantom teachers and administrators. Ever since the start of the War on Terror, the attention of the world’s media has been focused on the madrassa’s operating in Pakistan which are mainly attended by children living in rural areas. Popular worldwide beliefs are that a significant number of students in Pakistan are a part of these religious schools. This myth was debunked by professor Khwaja of Massachusetts Institute of Technology whose research examined statistical data to determine more precisely the enrollment in madrassas in Pakistan. The findings were that enrollment in Pakistani madrassas is relatively low, with less than 1 percent of all students enrolled in a school attending madrassas. There are as much as 100 times as many children in public schools as there are in madrassas and almost 40 times as many children in private schools as there are in madrassas. For the average Pakistani household, the choice of going to a madrassa is simply not a statistically significant option. Even in areas which surround Afghanistan, which are considered to be hotbeds of madrassa activity, madrassa enrollment is actually less than 7. 5 percent.

Outside this region madrassa enrollment is thinly, but evenly, spread across the rest of the country. There was no evidence of a dramatic increase in madrassa enrollment in recent years. Examining time trends it was found that madrassa enrollment actually declined in Pakistan from its creation until the 1980s. It increased somewhat during the religion-based resistance to the invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviets in 1979 and the subsequent rise of the Taliban. However, in the last few years, the data does not suggest that there is any dramatic increase in madrassa enrollment.

Among other criticisms the Pakistani education system faces is the gender disparity in enrollment levels. However, in recent years some progress has been made in trying to fix this problem. In 1990-91, the female to male ratio (F/M ratio) of enrolment was 0. 47 for primary level of education. It reached to 0. 74 in 1999-2000, so the F/M ratio has improved by 57. 44 percent within the decade. For the middle level of education it was 0. 42 in the start of decade and increased to 0. 68 by the end of decade, so it has improved almost 62 percent. In both cases the gender disparity is decreased but relatively more rapidly at middle level. But for whole of the decade the gender disparity remained relatively high at middle level, despite the fact that for the duration the F/M ratio for teachers and F/M ratio of educational institutions at the middle level remained better than at the primary level.

The gender disparity in enrolment at secondary level of education was 0. 4 in 1990-91 was 0. 67 percent in 1999-2000, so the disparity has decreased by 67. 5 percent in the decade or at the average rate of 6. 75 percent annually. At the college level it was 0. 50 in 1990-91 and it reached 0. 81 in 1999-2000, so gender disparity decreased by 64 percent with an annual rate of 6. 4 percent. The gender disparity has decreased comparatively rapidly at secondary school. The gender disparity in educational institutions at the secondary level of education was changed from 0. 36 in 1990-91 to 0. 52 in 1999-2000 with a 44 percent change. The same type of disparity at the college level was 0. 56 in 1990-91 and reached at 0. 64 in 1999-2000 with 14 percent change in the decade. The disparity at the college level has improved much less than that at the secondary level.

Cheating in exams is a big problem plaguing the Pakistani education system. Every year there are accounts of large scale cheating at various exam venues? Invigilators have been known to encourage cheating not only in public schools, but in foreign exams such as the SAT as well.

If you are just entering college, you need to be aware that earning a degree in something is not a guarantee you’ll be earning money in something. For instance, people who went to school in the 70′s to learn how to fix televisions were confident that they would have jobs well into the future. However, many solid state devices today have eclipsed the knowledge of that day and therefore, the many television repair shops have gone out of business. Technology is moving so fast that whatever you learn today, may become outdated before you even finish college.

3. Trial Amendment 

Refer to the article “Preliminary Analysis of Biological Enzymes Originating from Microorganisms”. If its theoretical discussion and the equation “a + b = c” could be tenable, it would be inevitable to cause the above contradictions in the traditional biological chain exposed and produce the following amendments.  

If the decomposers in the Fig. 1 were changed into “soil” and “atmosphere” and then set in the equation “a + b = c” (expressed with —M? going to decompose and synthesize) at every level of the substance transfer, this changed figure would become a biological chain with both content and form. Thus it would no longer be worried with all the above contradictions and initiate an essential change. Combining the discussion that microorganisms play a medium role at all levels of the transfer in the substance cycle in the ecosystem, both of the soil in the natural ecosystem and the chyme in the digestive tract in the animal body belong to the site or base materials for the microorganisms to decompose and synthesize. Their differences are merely in the site size, in the microorganism genus survival of the fittest, in the microorganisms density and in the efficiency to decompose and synthesize the organic substances, but their meanings are same. In the small world in the animal body, the chyme in the digestive tract is the same to the microorganisms as the soil for the plants to utilize in the natural world (in fact, such a soil in vivo is more important than the one in the natural world for the plants to utilize). At the same time, it also revealed a small unidirectional cycle (the chyme could be transformed into the animal body, but the animal body could not be transformed into its own chyme) in the animal body, which derived from the plants under the large background in the natural substance cycle. Subsequently, on the basis of these one by one small cycles, they are connected in series by a food chain and constitute another greater unidirectional cycle (as the food chain after getting rid of the “decomposers” from Fig. 1). The surplus plants, herbivores and carnivores in the series connection and the various animals at the top of the food chains, all of their destination is the soil and atmosphere, and finally they are connected in parallel to the large cycle in the nature (see Fig. 2).

Note: In the Fig. 1, the arrows indicate the eating and eaten relationship, but the amended arrows in the Fig. 2 indicate the meaning of decomposing and synthesizing in the eating and eaten processes.  

4. Biological chain and substance transformation 

The substance transformation in the Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 can be respectively shown by the following simple graphic methods (M = microorganisms). Thus we can see in a more intuitive way the asymmetry of substance transformation and the absence of the microorganisms in half of links in the traditional biological train, as well as the obvious incompatible contradiction between the traditional biological chain theory and the substance transformation law. These contradictions have been solved one by one in the trial amendment of Fig. 2.

We can see from the Fig. 2-1, there is the participation of microorganisms in the substance transformation at all levels reflected in the amended biological chain (red – green – red). But the substance transformation reflected in the Fig. 1 resulted the serious asymmetries due to the absence of microorganisms in some links, and made the substance cycle obstructed.  

There are two modes that the microorganisms are involved in the substance transformation in vivo, that are the direct participation inside the large intestine and the indirect participation above the large intestine. The indirect participation is their main mode, which belongs to a particular way, that is the enzymes secreted by the microorganisms in vivo and in food are absorbed into body in the intestinal tract, and then distributed to various digestive sites to break down organic substances. Because the animal life is based on plants, the indirect participation is the main mode that the microorganisms participate in the substance transformation in vivo and the energy stored in plants must be transferred by organic substances, some organic substances may be derectly absorbed by the animal body when they are broken down into small molecules and they are impossible to or need not be broken down into the inorganic (This is different from the plants).  

With the aid of the above two simple graphics, we can see more clearly that, in the three main species of living things (plants, animals and microorganisms) in the biosphere, the relations between microorganisms and animals as well as plants are not at all simple eating and eaten, and the microorganisms are also definitely indispensable, but they play a medium role and belong to a key element at all levels of substance transformation.  

5. Conclusions 

The amended biological chain has an essential difference from the traditional one. It might get rid of the incompatible contradictions with the substance transformation theory and the adverse effects to the relevant disciplines, cause the substance transformation at all levels to vitalize endlessly and cycle constantly under the drive of microorganisms along its own path.

Acquiring a degree may not be the ultimate aim of some students who would like to quench their thirst for a higher education. This is quite justified in today’s competitive world, where a mere degree may not fetch high returns in the race for employment. Therefore, some of the students who would like to do their masters degree, PhD or even a post- doctorate degree, would only be willing to study them even abroad. But this may be highly expensive and when a student is unable to meet the expenses, international scholarships offer a helping hand. International scholarship opportunities are found in the internet and open a new world for those who frantically search for them in order to get a PhD or a post doctorate degree. The university, from which the student graduated, can also offer some information regarding international scholarships, as they would have a special department that deals with exchange programs. They may also have advisors who could guide them in finding the international scholarship. International scholarships not only offer monetary assistance but also allow opening new vistas and opportunities to meet new people and get to know the new country and their culture. But there are certain rules to apply for international scholarships. While pursuing a post doctoral position, it is better to apply for an international academic research scholarship through an institution, as some companies and institutions would be willing to pay a grant to a young researcher similar to the field they are currently engaged in. So, they would be more willing to pay international scholarship and may even offer a job in their own company, as a post doctoral researcher. Normally, international scholarships are awarded by multinational companies that have subsidiaries in more than one country so that they have enough funds to finance the research. The results obtained through this research would be utilized by them to bring about a change in their products. Searching for an international scholarship on the internet is a bit harder as compared to other scholarships because of the lesser number of the scholarships and the availability of less number of students aspiring for them. Students find it very hard to get a proper supervisor who could influence their activity and often are a source of encouragement and this is one of the reasons for the lesser number of post doctoral candidates. It is highly advisable to utilize international scholarships because the expenses involved are not only the fees and educational expenses but more than that, they have to bear the travel expenses, accommodation, materials and so on. International Educational Financial Aid (IEFA) is the scholarship search engine that is a good source for scholarships for international students wishing to study abroad.

There can be no better news for a student loan borrower than to hear that their loan has been forgiven. This means that a portion, or perhaps all of the loan is cancelled and you no longer have to budget part of your income towards making your monthly student loan payments. Keep in mind that this option is not available to every student loan borrower, but there are special situations in which all or part of a loan can be forgiven.
You must remain realistic and realize that there are only a few specific circomstances in which your student loans may be forgiven. These situations are outlined below.
Volunteering
If you volunteer for certain organizations, you may qualify for loan forgiveness.
-$4,725 can be used toward your student loans if you serve in AmeriCorps for 12 months or more.
-Peace Corps volunteers can have 15% of their Perkins loan cancelled for each year of volunteer service, up to 70% of the total loan amount. They can also have their Stafford and consolidated loans deferred.
-For 1700 hours of service, Volunteers in Service to America may receive $4,725.
Teaching
Students who become full time teachers may have part of their student loans forgiven in certain circumstances.
If you become an elementary or secondary school teacher with students from low-income families, a certain portion of your Perkins Loan can be forgiven, depending upon the length of your service.
- 15% for years one and two
- 20% for years three and four
- 30% for year five
Check with your school district administration to determine whether your school is eligible for loan forgiveness under these provisions. Teachers may also be eligible for other loan forgiveness programs depending upon the state in which they teach.
Legal Professions
If you take a public service or a non-profit position after graduation, some law schools will forgive your loans. Visit the Equal Justice Works website for more details regarding cancelling your law school loans.

Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM) in Pune will conduct a national level entrance test on December 16, 2010 for its full time MBA programme with specialization like finance, human resources, operations and marketing. Students having a minimum of 50 percent marks in graduation will be eligible to apply for the course. For the benefit of both students and working executives, many MBA colleges in the country offer regular, executive, part time as well as distance courses that are well recognized in the industry. Distance MBA education is very popular among students and professionals due to its reasonable cost, flexible class timing and liberal course duration. The list of popular colleges and universities for distance MBA includes Indira Gandhi National Open University, Amity University, Alagappa University, Anna University and Annamalai University. The orientation for a management degree through distance learning mode is fuelled by the numerous advantages student enjoy in the present scenario.
